For sale, we have a decorative antique cast brass door knocker or striker.

This unique brass front door knocker features a detailed representation of the 'Trusty Servant', which is an emblematic figure portrayed in a notable painting at Winchester College. Traditionally, it is found hanging outside the kitchen entrance. The figure itself is a fascinating composite, part man, part pig, part deer, and part donkey, all combined in a way that invokes curiosity and intrigue. It has a padlock affixed to its mouth, along with various other symbols and representations skillfully arranged in its hands and upon its person, collectively signifying a character of immense value and significance. The painting of the Trusty Servant has a didactic function: it is accompanied by philosophical allegorical verses that correlate the servant's diverse animal parts with distinctive virtues that the students of Winchester College were meant to aspire to and embody in their lives.

  • Width 5.5 cm

Circa early 20th century.
