Vintage Mid-Century Queen Elizabeth II Bentwood Grain Measure - Historic 'Peck' with London Stamping
For sale is a decorative vintage mid-century Queen Elizabeth II bentwood dry grain measure, traditionally known as a ‘peck’. This historic piece is clearly stamped by the Weights and Measures authority with the ER crown insignia and the number 523 LCC, signifying its official use in London. The bottom of the measure is also stamped internally, adding to its authenticity and collectible value. Handcrafted from bentwood, likely elm, this measure features original steel reinforcement bands that have stood the test of time. These types of measures were essential tools in general stores and markets, used to accurately portion dry goods. They typically came in five sizes—1 quart, 2 quart, 4 quart, 1 peck (8 quarts), and 1/2 bushel (16 quarts). This particular peck is believed to be a one-pint dry goods measure, commonly used for grains and seeds like peas. This piece is not only a desirable collectible for those with an interest in commercial history but also serves as a charming decorative item. Its rich history and rustic appeal make it an ideal addition to any collection or a unique, character-filled plant pot.

Condition
Authentic original vintage used condition. Distressed by age and use over time. Some splitting to the oak and rust to the steel bands, so it is not watertight as a planter but would make a wonderful dry plant pot. Usual patination, wear and signs of use typical of an antique or vintage item of this age. Please carefully check all the photos for close up details as they form an integral part of the description. All of our items are antique, vintage or used so will show signs of wear and imperfections commensurate with a pre loved item of that age. We do our best to photograph and explain the condition of the item as best we can. If you have any questions, or a condition issue with any of our items, please contact Antiques Central direct and we will do everything we can to resolve the problem as quickly and as effectively as possible. Always remember, when buying vintage items, they will have signs of use but that is also what makes them so unique.
